| Description: | Ike Accepts! "Ike and running mate Nixon greet convention. In acceptance speech, Eisenhower promises to lead new crusade to peace and prosperity, as crowds chant, 'We want Ike!' Taft and other GOP leaders pledge party harmony for campaign." (Pre-leased) Photo opportunity: Candidate Dwight Eisenhower shakes hands with opponent Robert Taft amid a crowd of journalists. At the Republican National Convention, a Senator Noland (?) of California praises his colleague Senator Richard Nixon, the VP candidate (excerpt of speech). Nixon shaking hands, and waving to crowd. Mrs. Pat Nixon stands and waves with her husband on the podium, kisses his cheek. Nixon looks jubilant. Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower wave to crowd from podium. Convention hoopla. Delegates chant. Ike accepts party nomination - excerpt of speech: "Ladies and gentlemen, you have summoned me on behalf of millions of your fellow Americans to lead a great crusade for freedom in America and freedom in the world. I know something of the solemn responsibility of leading a crusade; I have led one." [Applause.] "I take up this task, therefore, in the spirit of deep obligation; mindful of its burdens and of its decisive importance, I accept your summons. I will lead this crusade." [Cheers.] "Our aims - the aims of this Republican crusade - are clear: to sweep from office an administration which has fastened on every one of us the wastefulness, the arrogance and corruption in high places, the heavy burdens and the anxieties which are the bitter fruit of a party too long in power." [Tough words about his former Commander in Chief! More cheers from audience.] "To achieve these aims, we must have total victory. We must have more Republicans in our state and local offices, more Republican governments in our states, a Republican majority in the United States House of Representatives and in the United States Senate, and of course, a Republican in the White House." [The crowd goes wild.] An exuberant Richard Nixon grabs Eisenhower's lifted arm and waves it for him; Ike allows this; Mamie, also on the podium, smiles. | |
