| Description: | Ike's Mission: First Leg of Peace Tour. Ike begins his epic three continent peace tour in Rome. Pelting rains for most of his stay keeps crowds to a minimum but President Dwight D. Eisenhower's visit has considerable impact. In extended consultations with Premier Segni and other leaders, paying homage at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and in audience with the Pope, the President's intensive agenda of consultation and ceremony sets a pattern for the remainder of his historic trip. Airplane lands, press cameramen take aim, Ike deplanes (Presidential seal visible), people behind him might be his son John Eisenhower and daughter-in-law Barbara. Handshakes, greetings, reviewing troops. U.S. flag flying at rainy airport. Motorcade passes umbrella-laden crowds along street. Wreath-laying ceremony. President and guests meet with Pope John XXIII. Motorcade on sunny day, Ike waves hat to crowds. Group of smiling clergymen applaud Ike. Ike climbs steps to presidential U.S. Air Force plane and tips his hat in farewell. | |
