| Description: | ILLUSIONS Cartoon by Joe Noble. "Hosted" by anthropomorphic microphone character. Amusing exploration of some optical illusions using animation and live action. United Kingdom Story is that a man goes into a cafe, falls in love (or else already is in love) with waitress and asks her for a date for that night. Nice drawing of town at night, houses with lights, smiling moon in dark sky, and caption "That Night." The man paces back and forth by a lamp post waiting for the girlfriend. When she finally arrives she is wearing a long narrow coat with horizontal stripes, and she looks very tall & thin. The man is shocked. As he stares at her, looking her up and down, he sees her as a giant matchstick. He falls over in a faint, bangs his head on streetlight, which falls over and releases huge flames from its base. The "microbophone" as they call it in the cartoon, explains that while "every flapper knows" that vertical stripes give slimming effect, very few people know that horizontal ones increase the apparent height. 2 squares of same size are shown, with stripes going different ways. The cross stripes really do look higher. Next single horizontal and vertical lines appear, demonstrating that vertical line looks longer. This principle is applied to the top hat. CU topper on man's head. MS another man, with measuring tape around his neck, takes the man's hat off. CU he holds tape across brim, which measures 12 inches across. CU measures height - 4 1/2 inches. Title implies that people might have guessed height to be 12 inches. Cartoon top hat with equal width of brim and height of crown appears. Shows that measurements are equal, but the hat looks gigantic. Gives "scientific" explanation for this effect. Application of optical illusions to fashion design. Drawing of dress with 2 long pleats running the length of the dress, giving a slimming effect. Microbophone explains that spots have the effect of making things look shorter. Says an angular gawky girl should wear light spots on dark background. Series of sketches of skinny girls wearing various outfits which include some fabric like that recommended. Another sketch of a girl wearing dress with lots of ruffles - "to round off corners". MLS pan on crowd of women in swimsuits waving at camera. MS panning up women's bodies, some in swimsuits, some in dresses. Reflections glittering on eyeglasses of woman at far rt. Pan left on row of women. MLS group of women in bathing suits pose standing and sitting on diving board and edge of pool. | |
