| Description: | Interviewer: "What's it like working in the store?" Man: "Well it's quite interesting. Just sort of the daily business you keep on top of what's going on in the world. It's quite interesting to see when some papers will sell, like if there is an important event going on in a country, you may sell out of something quick. A lot of students, for example, are starved for news from back home. Every time certain magazines from Africa come out a lot of African students start lining up to get them." Interviewer: "Are there many stores like this or do you think the Newsroom kind of has the monopoly on foreign news?" Man: "I don't think we have the monopoly but I think we have the best selection. I am sure we have the best selection." Interviewer asks if a lot of people count of the Newsroom. Man: "I think so. I think the Newsroom definitely fills a need that exists in a city like Washington. Our phone is generally ringing all the time with people asking 'do we have this, do we have that.' Another reason, especially for domestic papers, is there is a lot of tourists here in Washington. A lot of them stay at the many hotels in this area. So people from around the United States, they come in and they can see if the paper of their city is here. Also people in Washington, which is a very transient city, that are living here will look for papers, especially the Sunday papers, that want ads and job prospects in other cities. So definitely it serves a need." | |
