| Description: | Same as catalog # 501358. See also catalog # 171859, 430342 Raw footage from interview with John McCowan, an African-American civil rights worker in Hancock County, Georgia, USA, filmed by British TV crew. Hancock County, Georgia Close-up of Mr. McCowan as he explains his hopes for the future reliant on a society where whites and blacks exist and work side-by-side. Good quote: "I want to see a community where people are concerned only about people...not black, not white, just people" Would like to create an ideal integrated community as an example to other areas. Says true freedom for the black man will come from the South, not from the North, because the source of the problem is in the South. McCowan says the problem is not just racism but economics- -that if the economic problem were dealt with properly the problems of racism would dissipate. Camera zooms out as John McCowan outlines differing conditions in America's north and south, and how freedom must come from the south. He also mentions some intriguing ideas about racism as a economic problem rather than a racial problem. He mentions that once the economic problems of the south are dealt with, then the question of racial issues will be able to be tackled properly. | |
