| Description: | Good grooming in the age of Ike: MS elementary school classroom (pre-teens, adolescents, 'tweens); 8th graders at front, teacher explains, are looking for volunteers to be in a special 8th grade assembly. EVERYBODY raises his/her hand, and the teacher lets the 8th graders go through classroom and choose. "Whomever they choose," says the narrator, "it won't be anyone who isn't clean and neat." 01:18:18 as 8th grade boy and girl walk through "inspecting" the younger kids, two in foreground, a boy and girl, are talking back and forth. Good shot of early love? Narrator introduces boy as Don, and sets out to show how he could do better in the neatness department. 01:18:37 swish pan, back to Don asleep in typical boy's room, struggling out of bed sleepily, rubbing his face, collapsing back in bed 01:19:02 CU shower head, boy washing face with rag, grimly washing his arms and upper body. CU ear with washcloth, foot same 01:19:37 CU hand with fingernail brush, getting clean, scrubbing; Don rinses soap off. "And here's another thing," the narrator advises. "Wash your hair on the same day each week. Wednesday, Friday, whichever day you choose." 01:20:05 CU boy washing hair, rinsing off 01:20:33 CU Don rubbing down with towel, brushing hair with bathrobe on, combing in a part and getting an forehead wave worthy of Elvis 01:21:14 zoom into CU shots of bathroom elements (clean and neat): towel and washrag, shampoo bottle by tub, sink basin 01:21:32 CU boy putting on socks, and his shoes are caked with dirt and dried mud. Shoeshine kit magically appears, and kid gets a spit shine in no time. 01:22:00 CU clothes scattered on floor; boy cleans up room, folding pants over hangar, hanging up shirt 01:22:30 fast-motion shot of boy cleaning up closet. (Fast motion ends) CU boy combing hair, showing his clean hands, CU belt buckle, shiny shoes. (He is such a great 1950s type, reminds one of "the Beav"...) 01:23:25 CU girl ("...now how about you, Mildred?") 01:23:31 MS girl at mirror in bathrobe, with towel around hair, brushes out hair 01:23:50 CU girl rolling hair, filing nails, admiring the look' CU foot with toenails clipping 01:24:40 MS girl puts away clothes, folds shirt and puts in drawer. Fast motion scenes of girl folding and straightening out dresser drawer 01:25:15 black scratch on film begins; gets worse (runs to 01:26:36) 01:26:36 MS girl in slip at mirror, appears wearing different outfits 01:27:15 back in classroom, 8th graders pick out lucky boy and girl, who walk off holding hands. Mildred spins around to Don and says (MOS), "I think we can do better" or the like, then turns back to her book | |
