Jones of Lowestoft) and a newer, larger-scale processing plant. kippers being smoked - the traditional way and in factory. (fishing industry, fish processing, fish packing, kippers, smoked fish, food processing, mechanization, machinery, factory, fishery, women workers, labor) At T, Jones building is very old looking and dark - -looks like there's been lots of kippers cut up here for lots of years. Man dumps a barrel of fish onto big table area where women stand working. MSs CUs of women workers cutting up fish etc. They wear (over their own sweaters etc.) a garment with bib and shoulder straps and floor-length skirt of a shiny oil cloth type material; looks like they also have heavy duty aprons over this. We see the skirts in a MS from waist -down, behind 2 of the women workers standing at table, who are dropping the cut up fish into wicker baskets on the floor. MCU Basket of fish is dunked in a vat of sauce. MCUs 2 young men hanging up kippers to dry. ECU of kippers. Exterior of building. MS interior: elderly man starts fires to several piles of white stuff; pan up to kippers hanging on racks overhead. Low angle exterior shot of smoke coming through attic window. Interior shot of fish being smoked. MS man carrying 2 racks of smoked kippers out of the smokehouse, then packing them into crate. Fade to low angle shot of a big container of fish being dumped by machinery. (This is the modern kipper place. Everything here looks bigger, more mechanized, cleaner, the workers are in uniforms, all in white.) Shots of fish moving on conveyor belt. Fish in barrel on its side which is turning as water is sprayed into it. Fish coming out of washer, falling into boxes, male worker lifts box. MCU man dumps container of fish into spinning tub. MCU Woman worker putting fish into machine. CU cut pieces of fish come pouring with water and landing on a grated moving surface. CU worker further trimming fish pieces, grabbing them off this conveyor belt. Fish in a big vat of reddish liquid. more fish on a conveyor. MS woman worker lifts a tray of kippers onto one of many shelves in a big rack. Guys pushing rack away. LS 2 men workers shut door of the big smoking room. CU man checking guages outside the smoker. Man opens doors of furnace looks at fire. MS women workers packing kippers. CUs of workers packing. CU worker puts tray of 4 kipper boxes into a machine, closes it.
