| Description: | KIRI CLOGS - A TALE OF JAPAN Old fashioned techniques used in the production of Japanese wooden clogs. Japanese "Geta" shoes made of kiri-wood; good shots of traditional craftsman at work. Japan MLS yard filled with huge towers of stacked wood pieces, tied together with ropes both horizontal and vertical. 2 workers emerge from behind stacks of wood. MS part of stack of wood blocks, already cut into uniform size, stacked like bricks with spaces between them, in a circular tower. MLS man sitting on ground with this stack in BG. He picks up one of several wood pieces on ground beside him; in BG some young workers push a cart with bundles of wood pieces. MCU man holding wood block, pointing at its side, looks like 2 small squares are drawn on the wood. MS man sits on ground, holding block of wood between his feet while sawing through the middle of it. MCU man sawing; the wood is pushed up against a short pole stuck in the ground, and is held in place between the man's feet. Title says this carpenter has been using his feet as a vise for 30 years, without losing a toe! CU same; his feet now hold the wood block horizontally as he uses a thin saw to cut out the squares shown before. CUs of man using tools (chisels, plane) to form the block into the basic shape of the traditional shoe - thin rectangle of wood with 2 thicker bars crosswise on one face. CU he drills holes through flat side. CU another worker with threads leather strips through the holes in the block to make a thong strap; on the upper side of shoe the leather is wrapped in cloth.
