| Description: | LAYING A "TALK-HIGHWAY" Submarine telephone cable layed between USA & Cuba. Interesting item showing the laying of an under sea telephone cable between the US and Cuba. Shot panning on cable stretched along ship's deck. Cable stretched over a turning wheel which is taking it over the side of the ship. Shot from ship looking at water w/ cable disappearing into it. Shot from above, looking down at ship, panning left to look down at barge alongside ship; the cable is being lowered onto the barge and laid down in a big circle. Closer shot of workers on barge pulling down the cable. Wide shot looking across water toward barge. Workers on barge. Cable stacked the big circle; it is pulled from there, through some heavy loops where workers stand holding onto big levers, the brakes, to stop the cable if there is a problem. MS one of the brake operators, w/ the cable moving past in FG. Cable going into water. In harbor: men letting cable off the boat, w/ barrels attached to it at intervals. Wide shot looking toward barge, w/ a line of barrels leading out to it, to keep the cable floating. Shot looking in other direction: the floating barrels continue toward shore of Cuba; big classical buildings in BG. Line of men wade in shallow water pulling the cable ashore. MS 2 workers pulling the cable slide down dirt slope. Long line of men on shore pulling the cable. | |
