A special effect is used in which each shot is shown w/ a frame around it which looks like proscenium of stage, and gives the effect of looking into a box. Wide shot showing most of the stark, shadowy, rather expressionistic set; Juliet is of course in balcony, Romeo standing below. But next MS Romeo (Gielgud) - -here he fills up the whole frame & looks like a giant (because one tends to see the frame as the real proscenium) Cont. with shot of Gwen Ffrangton-Davies wildly emoting, waving her arms about, then letting down a long scarf. MS Gielgud kisses scarf; also very dramatically. Another Juliet shot, another wide shot of set. | |
