| Description: | LOONIE LIDS Cartoon from 1933 showing fashion predictions for 1950, by in-house cartoonist Joe Noble. Series of drawings of hats and headdresses through history - various women's hats from middle ages on. Quirky animation predicting all sorts of bizarre hat contraptions that will exist by 1950. Title says that formerly emphasis was on appearance rather than utility. All the sketches depict young pretty and probably upper class women, then suddenly there's one of a much poorer and older looking woman standing by a "Bar" sign! Predictions for "Useful" fashions of the future. Sketch of henpecked husband carrying many packages. Same man wearing hat w/ packages hanging from hooks on its wide brim, and a little square thing (identified as a Season Ticket) held in a clip sticking up from the top. Next, "The Brazier Bowler" - -a hat with fire coming from it for a man who's always cold. Sketch of girl wearing a big poofy sort of beret - -this is called the "Tamachute" - a combination hat and parachute. Cartoon of the woman flying an airplane; plane suddenly goes to pieces in the sky and the woman falls out but is saved by her hat turning into a parachute. "The Artful Dodger" - A hat w/ big feather on side which folds down to become a fake beard and moustache, providing a disguise for its wearer. "The Bandit Bosher" Combo hat/automatic boxing glove. Woman strolling along; robber comes up behind her with a gun; she puts up her hand to her hat, and a boxing glove on a spring juts out backward and punches the bad guy. "The Radio Toque" - -a woman's hat with radio receiver & headphones hidden inside it - -this gets fairly technical with various parts of the radio identified, and there's another drawing showing the grounding system in the woman's shoe. "The Super Hatrodyn" - another radio hat - this one shows a man with a big radio & antenna on top of a disc on his head. The man is struck by lightning attracted by this headgear and ends up in a heap of radio parts on the ground, exclaiming "Crikey! I must have got the weather report!"
