Lord French; British Army commander; who was in charge of BEF at start of war; presents the Military Cross to town of Ypres in Belgium (pronounced "Wipers" by the British soldiers who fought there). The fighting was terrible there, and about a million men died on both sides in the course of three great battles. Opens w/ title frame. Shot of French in full dress uniform w/ white plumes and all; handing a plaque or document; then the medal; to elderly civilian man (poss. Mayor; who stands behind a table; this takes place; in a tent; other officers in BG. Then the mayor (?) holds up pillow to camera - on it a coat of arms w/ 2 types of cross hooked together. 01.47.50..12 Looking down line of soldiers w/ flags dipped; standing either in wide st. or square. Then shot of French & other officers - Brit & Belgian - saluting; at graves of fallen soldiers - cross w/ wreath in FG. Cemetery.
