| Description: | MAKING SCENTED BAGS Processes involved in making potpourri then the "vanity bags" which contain it. Women making sachets filled with pot-pourri. Group of women in period costumes of 18th or early 19th century (including little white ruffled caps on every head) sit on patio doing handiwork, sewing baskets on their laps. One stands behind table mixing something in bowl. CU she uses 2 mortar and pestle sets to grind spices. MS 1 woman sprinkles powder (orris-root) from a folded paper into box of pieces of leaves and petals. She & another woman mix up the contents of box, just moving stuff around with their hands. MLS 2 women pick up handfuls of this mixture and transfer into a large ceramic pot and a basket. MCU looking down at woman's lap as she sews a sprig of dried leaves & berries onto a small bag. Shots of the entire group at work, a regular sewing bee. CU woman completes bag by tying it with a ribbon. CU woman's hand putting several sachet bags of different styles and fabrics on a table. Shot of the women sitting by 2 tables covered with cloths on which the sachets are arranged. Woman in center still busy stuffing potpourri into another bag. Another woman comes along (she wears hoop skirt, a ribboned hat and carries a dainty purse.) She looks over (and smells) several of the bags, finally chooses one and carries it off. Crafts, scent, historical recreations. | |
