| Description: | MARBLES (aka MARBLES COMPETITION AT CRAWLEY) The Telcon Terribles and The Marvels battle it out in a marble match Crawley, West Sussex. Various shots of football crowds at Wembley; scarves being waved, rattles being rattled. C/U of two pairs of men's hands, smoothing a pile of sand over a cream surface. M/S of five men in red jumpers walking over to the playing area on a lawn in Crawley, West Sussex; some chairs are set out either side of a circular playing area where the two men are smoothing sand. The red jumper men sit on one side and give their names to a man with a clipboard. C/U of a badge on a red jumper reading 'British Marbles Champions 1957 - 1958 / Telcon Terribles': (we are told they are the undefeated champions of the world). Some men in normal clothes seated on the left give their details to another clipboard man; commentator tells us this team are called 'The Marvels'. This second clipboard man seems to be the referee and he gets a player from each team to stand and shake hands, then draws a line in the sand. The two players straddle the line, and drop a marble from their noses to decide who gets to play first in this marble match. The player who drops his marble closest to the line starts; C/U shows it is the Telcon player. The referee empties a bag of marbles into the centre of the playing area, then the players from alternate teams take their turn in flicking their marble from the outside edge into the group of marbles in the centre. C/U of two Marvel players looking on despondently and shaking their heads. We are told that the general idea of the game is to knock all the marbles out of the ring, leaving your own in play. Various marble flicking C/Us; M/S of Telcon team applauding; C/U of referee making notes. Commentator says "...it's good to know that here, at least, is one game in which we can beat the world!" M/S as a Telcon makes a winning shot; his team behind him applaud and look very pleased with thumbs up. The referee holds up his hands to signal game won. | |
