| Description: | Camera Interviews. Matheson Lang, off-stage and on. Many millions are familiar with Mr. Lang's appearance on-stage, but our Cameraman caught an unconventional 'shot' of him at home - not forgetting 'Lassie', the dog. Various shots of actor Matheson Lang in his garden. He plays with his dog, then putts a golf ball across his lawn. Lassie sits beside Matheson as he tells us a story about a snuff box that was given to him during the long run of 'The Wandering Jew' in London. A lady gave it to him, saying it had been in her family for years. In Tunis, her great-grandfather had found an old man lying in the road and took him home. They arrived at the man's house, a huge place full of treasures in every room. The old man told the Englishman he was the Wandering Jew and gave him the snuff box. Matheson says ever since he has had the box, he has had good luck and is getting quite superstitious about it. Intertitles explain how Matheson Lang is associated with Temple Thurston's play 'The Wandering Jew', and set the scene for an excerpt we are about to see, where Joanne de Beaudricourt (played by Stella Arbenina) has come to meet her lover, an Unknown Knight (Matheson), in a tent, outside the Walls of Antioch. The play is set at the time of the Crusaders. In the excerpt we see the woman demanding to know who her lover, the Unknown Knight, really is, because he has no fear of death. She discovers with horror that he is the Wandering Jew, who spat upon the Nazarene and is forced to wander and never die until Jesus visits him again. As the excerpt ends, it looks as if he is about to be revisited! | |
