N. of the Endeavour first sighted Australia near this point which he named Point Hicks after Lieutenant Zachary Hicks who first so the land." People laying wreaths at the base of the memorial before leaving. As the commentary states, the cottage that stood at this spot, where James Cook was born, had been removed and reconstructed in Australia. It was re-opened at the same time the obelisk was dedicated.
