Johannesburg, South Africa - sometime during Second World War. Soldiers put notice reading 'Your Country Needs You Now' on side of truck. Another notice - in Afrikaans? - reads 'U Land Het U Nou'. Civilians mill about around huge field gun in city street or square, outside the city hall. Artillery soldiers chat to men crowded around the gun. Some men climb onto the machine to have a closer look. Commentator makes reference to the gun being the reason why Italians prefer to run. M/S pan along group of new recruits lined up on a parade ground. C/Us of the men. They fall out and climb into trucks, bound for the training depot. The new Springboks wave to camera as they are driven off. | |
