| Description: | Festivals; funny contests; World War One. Event for mothers with sons in the military. Opens with shot of fairgrounds with women walking around; tents in BG. 3 women in FG; walking toward camera; 2 of them old ladies in lots of black fabric --Victorian style fashion. Next a very silly; funny scene: a line of women in a wacky contest trying to eat muffins hanging from a string; while others watch. Then the same contest for the men (all young; presumably the sons of these Mothers); they go at it in a more vigorous way; they have their hands tied behind their backs; and are wearing newspapers tucked into their shirts for bibs; a crowd is gathered; laughing. CU of one of the participants in action; getting the last of a muffin in his mouth. Definitely not an example of good manners for eating. Another contest and a very weird one: 2 men are on the ground with a pole under their knees and over their elbows; and they are trying to knock each other over or something -- they just keep scooting around on the ground; sort of wrestling without arms in some weird manner; 2 other men recline on the grass behind them; watching; and a ring of other spectators stand around them. | |
