| Description: | MRS DR MP CLOSE-UP OF DR EDITH SUMMERSKILL We see the different roles of housewife, doctor and MP Edith Summerskill. Camberley, Surrey and London. A look at the varied duties of Dr. Edith Summerskill MP. First we see Dr Edith walking her dog in the countryside. Then we see her driving her car along a suburban road as she sets off on her rounds as a doctor. She gets out and knocks on the front door of a patient. In her role as housewife Dr Edith goes shopping in a quiet street, looking in shop windows at groceries and clothes. She stops to chat to some housewives and two servicewomen (ATS?) in the street. Then we see Dr Edith setting off from her country home in Camberley with her briefcase and arriving at the railway station. She gets on a train and we then see her walking towards the Houses of Parliament. Sequence with natural sound follows, of Dr Edith being interviewed at a desk by Anna Wibberly, Editor of 'Everywoman'. Ms Wibberly asks Dr Edith about the effects of the war on the family and the changing role of women in these times. They discuss how women can carry on working and bring up a family. Dr Edith says she thinks men are becoming more broad-minded and she is lucky to have such a husband. C/U of Dr Edith's husband, Dr E Jeffrey Samuel, sitting in an armchair, smoking a pipe and doing a crossword. His wife helps with a clue. Also in the living room are their children, 17-year-old Michael and 12-year-old Shirley who sit reading books. (women's rights, women's liberation) | |
