| Description: | Nation Honors Glenn/The Return Of A Conquering Hero The family of the man of the hour - Colonel John H. Glenn, Jr., Greets his family at Patrick air force base near Cape Canaveral for the first time since his great saga in space. There's a poignant scene of Mrs. Glenn snatching a few secret moments with her husband before cheering throngs claim their hero. Vice President Johnson seen behind John Glenn, as he hugs his daughter. Colonel John Glenn wipes away tears. Glenn’s mother and father congratulate their son. Crowds, sign reads: 'COL. GLENN WELCOME TO EARTH'. Glenn walks next to President Kennedy. Newsreel cameras lined up. Kennedy presenting medal to Glenn. A large crowd is gathered to greet Glenn's plane, and on the sidewalks during a motorcade. Glenn waves to crowds from motorcade. Crowds line streets, girls huddle under umbrellas in the rain. CU pin of Col, John Glenn, 'First American Astronaut in Orbit'. Little girls shake banner which reads: 'Welcome Big John'. Banner across street, 'Welcome - Astronaut John H. Glenn Jr.'. Mrs. Glenn joins her husband and waves from the motorcade. Pan people on balcony of buildings waving. Capitol Dome. Glenn at joint session of Congress, where he receives a standing ovation. Colonel Glenn’s parents in above balcony. Glenn speaks, "Friendship Seven is just the beginning, a successful experiment. It is another plateau in our step by step program of increasingly ambitious flights. The earlier flights of Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom were stepping stones." Points to Grissom , standing ovation, motions for them to stand up to be recognized. Tells funny story about meeting little Caroline Kennedy, she asked him, "Where's the Monkey?" Congress breaks out in laughter. Glenn replies, "Listen I didn't get a banana pellet on the whole ride." Speech continues. With quiet pride Colonel Glenn calls for the recognition of the team that helped put him in space and looked to a great future of exploration in other worlds, saying: 'As our knowledge of this universe in which we live increases, may god grant us the wisdom and guidance to use it wisely.' | |
