| Description: | Social services. "National Kitchen"; established in Stoke Newington; near London's East End; provides food for poor children; c. 1910s. Men in winter coats hats; sponsors of project(?) enter through gate. Mayor in top hat and big medallion standing at gate; greeting the men; with young boys peering through fence in BG. Shot of several children - 3 girls in FG holding large cups or plates; boy peeking round in FG. Small girl crosses in FG holding out her plate like "Please Sir can I 'ave some more?" - really the whole thing is very Dickensian. A sour-looking girl walks toward cam. CU girl with long hair messily tied back; holding both a bowl and a mug; in front of iron fence; other kids in BG behind bars of fence; the girl stands still for a few secs then starts to turn; still looking back toward cam. Great shot of a bunch of happy rowdy little urchin boys all screaming and waving their caps in the air and falling into one another. Fun! Next a CU of man in coat & hat; with blond moustache; standing in front of fence; lifts his hat. BG. (Some of following shots are repeats) Respectable upper-class people coming through gate; w/ an an urchin among them stuffing food into his mouth. Kids standing on steps; then starting to walk forward Shot of more cute boy waifs & Juvenile Delinquents; pan on group as they start waving & laughing (Same as before). Mayor again. CU moustached man again. Charity; soup kitchens; poverty; hunger; food; underclass; urban problems; cities; children | |
