The span will connect the Borough of Staten Island with mainland New York - the first time that a bridge has joined the Island with the State of which it is a part. Built in 1964 the Verrazano Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world. Even today it is surpassed only by the Humber Bridge in England.
