| Description: | MS reporter asks about numbers of men leaving Vietnam. Nixon corrects himself and asks not to be held to exact numbers. MS's reporter asking if he will meet w/ demonstrators at the White House the following morning. Nixon pauses, then gives hesitant yet somewhat positive answer. From the corps, we hear "Thank you Mr. President," signalling the official end of the press conference. Nixon asks the press to wait a moment. He asks them to rise for a moment of silence in memory of journalist Mariam Smith. They rise, pause respectfully, he thanks them for their complicity. Nixon leaves the East Room. | |
