Note: Cornhill Street in Boston was once known as the book selling centre of the USA. The shop being demolished was the last remaining bookshop in the Cornhill Street. "Boston 'Book Party': Owner gives away 50,000 volumes." GV of Boston with new construction in progress (urban renewal). CU Street sign which reads "Cornhill". GV Exterior of building, the Brattle Bookshop, which is to be demolished. The store’s old sign: “Oldest Continuous Antiquarian Book Shop Site in America 1925 Brattle Book Shop.” MS the proprietor, George Gloss, ringing a bell (to signal next batch of customers to come in, rummage, and take what they can). The shop has a long line in front of it. VS Crowds pour into bookshop and help themselves to as many books as they can carry. The owner, George Gloss, is giving them all away due to the impending demolition of his bookstore. VS of people looking through the shop, climbing the shelves, and filling up bags and boxes. One woman picks among mostly empty shelves and piles of books strewn about the floor. Ends with same GV of Boston as the opening shot. | |
