| Description: | OLD PEOPLES RALLY AND DUNMOW FLITCH TRIAL Nice film of old people attending rally and watching Dunmow Flitch trial at Wolverhampton. Wolverhampton, West Midlands L/S of motor coaches drawn up outside the civic hall. L/Ss of old folks going inside the hall. General views of the audience inside the hall. Seems to be nearly all female pensioners. L/S of the Dunmow Flitch Trial in progress. Sound sequence as we see couples entering the 'Dunmow Flitch' contest being questioned, in a light-hearted way, by a man dressed as a policeman and another dressed like a barrister. The stage is set to look like a courtroom and the couples stand in a box. Cut-in shots of the audience laughing and applauding. One husband swears on a telephone book to tell "the truth, the whole truth and anything but the truth"! This couple have been married since 1906 (laughter) and the husband says now he is retired he doesn't get up any earlier than 10 minutes past 8 in the morning. The policeman asks if his wife brings him a cup of tea in the morning and he says yes, "practically every morning since I've been married". Applause. The Judge makes notes. Another couple are both 79 years old (applause), have been married 58 years, have 14 children (applause) and "about 25 grandchildren". Shots of the winners, Mr and Mrs Duce, being presented with the Flitch (side of bacon on a plate). C/U of the flitch; pan up to Mrs Duce and then pan to Mr Duce | |
