| Description: | "The first Moscow studio is shown, along with scenes from classic films--'Potemkin', 'Mother', the first film of Lenin, 'Ballad of a Soldier', 'Circus', and interview with past and present directors and actors. We glimpse a film in progress and learn of the size and international prestige of the Soviet film industry." Cinema, Moviemaking, behind-the-scenes. 00:00:24:- EST shots of Moscow. Travelling EST shot of Mosfilm building, passing from L to R; followed by travelling LS of the building, driving up the driveway, passing a film crew using a crane. MS of a projection screen, archival B&W footage of the building of Mosfilm being shown; cut to wide format of the construction and ground breaking. MS interview with Mosfilm historian. 00:03:28:- Montage of SERGEI EISENSTEIN: stills of the filmmaker and excerpts from "Battleship Potemkin". Montage of VSEVOLOD PUDOVKIN: stills of the man and excerpts from "Mother". Multi-screen footage of ALEXANDER DOVZHENKO. Motion footage of SERGEI LUKEVICH (sp), MIKHAIL ROME (sp). Excerpt from a recreation of the Revolution, an actor dressed as VLADIMIR LENIN speaking to a room of Bolsheviks. 00:05:04:- CU of still of Lenin, a red flag waving in BG. Excerpt from YULI ORISEMAN's "The Communist": a color film based on the Revolution; MS's of a dirty, ragged young man being beaten by a railcar, eventually shot to death and falling into the thick mud. Split-screen montage of GRIGORI ALEXANDROV: stills of the filmmaker and excerpts from his work. Split-screen montage of YVONNE PYEV (sp): stills and excerpts from the early comedic director's work. Split-screen montage of ALEXANDER PUDSHK (sp): stills of the director and excerpts from his colorful yet terrible science fiction films (check out the awful Toho-like atomic creatures). Excerpt from "Ballad of a Soldier" by GIGORI TCHUKRY (sp), a misty B&W tale of a soldier coming home after WWII. 00:07:15:- Excellent montage (some use of split and multi screen) of a day at Mosfilm: art directors making plans, scenarists building a set, equipment vaults being opened, wardrobe and prop departments, actors in various costumes (Arabiac, Renaissance, London dandy, etc) talking behind the scenes, actors in the makeup department (some great material: CU of a latex mask being peeled off an actor's face, MS of man getting made up as a woman). 00:09:26:- CU's of film being developed in house, passing quickly by the camera. MS of a technician at work. Excerpts from "People's Commissar", a recent film (at the time) about one of Lenin's collegues; CU of a flatbed screen, rushes being played on it, then pan L to the director talking to the camera about the film and the film's subject. MS (3/4 view) of a projection screen, rushes for "The Testament" being played; zoom out to wide shot, one of the actors doing Foley work (dubbing his voice) in a recording studio; MS's of the film and then of the actor performing. 00:12:26:- Wide LS's of a large ranch where Mosfilm actors prepare their action parts (horse riders in Cossack uniforms, soccer players, gymnasts, etc); low angle MS of Cossack cavalry leaping over a barricade and the camera; excerpt from a film where the cavalry charges onto the battlefield. Montage of the special effects department as they create a commercial airline disaster (some amazing material here as prop planes overturn and break apart, the actors seemingly spinning form the gaping hole and towards the separated fuselage). CU of a wall of actor head shots. EST shots of the Film Actor's Theater; MS interview with two old timer actors talking about the profession (a slate is brought into frame, clapped, started over). MS's of a film crew shooting a man dressed as a 13th century Orthodox priest (some good behind the scenes material). 00:16:34:- More Soviet directors talk about their work (yipee). More excerpts from the work (hooray). Behind the scenes of a comedic science fiction film. Excepts from a musical set in the 1800's. Even more MS's of directors talking about their work. Montage of excerpts from contemporary Mosfilms: dramas, comedies, musicals. 00:25:26:- Wide LS of a circle of people dancing by a river. EST shots of the "prestigous" Moscow International Film Festival, followed by montage of people arriving at the gala event, night and day; excerpts from premiering films (a WWII flick followed by a certainly tender coming of age piece... excellent MS of a happy young woman in a black dress, standing in a forest, the rain soaking her, her hand caressing her body slowly, a small rainbow next to her); MS of a man receiving 1st prize. CU of several awards spinning on a lazy susan, one of which is an academy award (Oscar trophy). More EST shots of the Mosfilm HQ. | |
