| Description: | ONE HALF OF THE WORLD ETC' - here, for instance, are first pictures ever taken of centuries old "Fete - du - Boeuf', celebrated annually at Barjols in the Province of Var. Traditional festival in Barjols in which a steer is blessed and sacrificed in commemoration of another Boeuf that once saved the Barjolais from famine during a siege. France. MLS pan as a man leads a steer into an ancient French town square, crowded with people, mostly young men and boys dressed in their Sunday best, who are all jumping up and down! (this is the dance "Tripettes") The beast, decorated with ribbons, is led to the center of the area where a statue of Saint Marcel has been set up. MLS the steer is blessed by a priest; priests and altar boys stand by the steer; one of the priests is reading from Bible or prayer book; meanwhile the boys in the crowd continue bouncing up and down boisterously and some in the background are shooting rifles into the air! Wow! Closer shot of crowd jumping and shooting. MLS group of butchers (men and boy assistants) jumping up and down in their typical long white aprons, worn over one shoulder. MLS priest shakes holy water on the animal and the man leads him away. Procession through narrow street - policeman leads the way followed by the man leading the steer followed by butchers and the rest of the crowd. MS the curly-headed steer drinks from a fountain as the crowd watches (little does he know it's his last drink). Shot of crowd continuing to celebrate at night; many in crowd have sparklers & there seems to be a bonfire. MS procession the next day: the body of the slaughtered steer is paraded on a big spit on horse-drawn cart decorated with flowers etc. LS group of boys with long drums. MLS women in traditional costume perform folk dances in square as villagers watch. LS more Barjolais in folk costumes dance as the beef is roasted on the spit in a park.
