Description:INTERVIEWS FROM SUMMING UP NO.15 aka OPINIONS ON THE LABOUR GOVT John Parsons interviewing women regarding the election

London, England

Various shots of John Parsons (Reporter & Public Relations Officer) interviewing women regarding the election. CU shots of Mrs Large, Mrs Ruffell, Mrs Madden and Mrs Yates

Parsons: 'Now Mrs .Large you look as if you have some very considered opinions, what do you think of the present political situation?
Mrs Large: Well myself, I think they have done their very best as far as things are concerned, but if only workmen didn't strike so much, striking for this and striking for that, things would be so much better.'
Parsons: And what is your solution to help the situation.?
Mrs Large: Well, for the workmen to do their share. I mean the Government does their share. With the rationing, I think the rationing of food is quite/the correct thing to do, because the rich would get everything and the poor nothing.
Parsons: I see, well I think I'll ask your friend Mrs. Ruffell and see what she has to say about that. What do you think Mrs. Ruffell?
Mrs. Ruffell: 'I quite agree with Mrs .Large. I feel that if there were less strikes and more action and every body pulled their weight we'd get farther afield. I mean, the Government have had a very tough time of it and given the chance I think they can give us all that we really want.'
Parsons: 'Are you satisfied with the present Government?
Mrs. Ruffell: Yes, very much so, very much indeed.
Parsons: Mrs. Madden will you give your opinions on the situation today.
Mrs. Madden: I feel it was very difficult for whatever party got in. I'm a very strong Conservative myself and always have been and I think there is several things , with whoever is in, that wants putting right. We live in a residential district which is full of terribly derelict houses and I think the Tory Landlords are paying for the situation. But really the difficulty is to get licenses to pull down and put up. Another think I feel strongly about is the complete lack of prestige abroad now and I think it's dreadful that countries never had dared to do so 50 years ago, are more or less cooking a snook.'
Parsons: Have you any brief solution?
Mrs. Madden: I think licenses should be taken off building. Building or pulling down should be made very much easier and as for our foreign affairs I think diplomats should have a freer hand and not be so tied, and be able to say what they think.'
Parsons: Mrs. Yates now that the election is over, what is your opinion of the present political situation.'
Mrs.Yates: 'Well, I don't think it can carry on as it is for long. It is a very unsatisfactory state for the country and I don't think it will be very long before there is another General Election.
Parsons: 'What do you think is wrong with the present Government?'
Mrs. Yates: 'Well they seem to put the wrong people in the wrong jobs, and they don't seem to put the people in that know what they are doing. They kinda put people in that have no idea of what they are doing.'
Parsons: 'Have you any views on nationalisation?
Mrs. Yates: Yes, I don't like it at all. I think it is the wrong to do after a war. I mean our country was in debt at the end of the war. They say nationalised industries are bound to lose for about five years, surely at the end of a war that is the wrong time to start nationalising.'
Parsons: 'May I finally ask what solution you have in your mind for the situation? Mrs.Yates: 'I would like to see the Conservatives back. We didn't do so badly under them before the war, everybody says we did, but I don't
