| Description: | Outer London's Clubs & Cabarets - The Hungaria River Club - Maidenhead. Maidenhead - almost the home of River Clubs for London's enjoyment Brigade - Maidenhead, Berkshire. Several shots of people in boats on the River Thames at Maidenhead. Some men and women in swimsuits get out of a small cruising boat and are greeted on the landing stage by a man in tails. Various shots of the grounds of the Hungaria River Club; people sit at tables beside the swimming pool and have tea. The younger ones splash about in the pool and have fun. Inside the club we see people in evening dress dancing to the music of Maurice and his Boys. The club seems to be decorated in the style of an exotic French / Moroccan town, with signs in French and men wearing fez hats and Moroccan-style robes wandering about the tables. Celebrities Claude Hulbert, Vernon Bartlett, Enid Trevor, Eric Maschwitz ("new BBC variety and vaudeville controller"), George Posford (composer of 'Goodnight Vienna'), Jean Colin and Hermione Gingold are seen at tables. Outside, on an illuminated dance floor we see more couples dancing. Away from the dance floors, men and women play a game that involves rolling a ball up a slope and bouncing it into a hole (skeeball). Others watch some little cars going around a small racetrack; these are presumably games laid on by the club. Acrobat Betty Browning does her rubber-limbed act on the dance floor as the diners sit at tables and watch. | |
