| Description: | ON PREVIEW CASSETTE # 201516, 210686B Rare early COLOR footage of a trip to Jamaica, c. 1930. Faded somewhat, but more color might be coaxed out with a telecine transfer. CU map from brochure. Pan Montego Bay (?) with white cruise ship in the harbor, along with some naval vessels. Pan beach, then we have native fishermen in boat with large fish. More beach shots, including an MS sunbathing woman. Dim shots of a cave or grotto with waterfall. interesting view of woman in dress being shown the sights by a black tour guide, old jalopy in background. Title: "Jungle." LS & MS of cattle farmer with his herd, walking down dirt road. Excellent shots of banana workers, walking with huge bunches on their heads past a man who is issuing tokens or money to each person. Mostly women with these huge banana bunches on their heads, the fruit being thrown onto a large pile. These views of the hard work involved in a banana plantation are as good as any documentary. film stock changes, now black and white, with the same scenes of women (mostly) carrying bunches of bananas to be loaded. Three American tourists sit comfortably and watch the work, smiling for the camera. LS warships in harbor, more banana hauling by hand. A white man hacking at the bananas on the women's heads with a machete. Sunset shots of bay and ships from hotel lawn. film stock returns to COLOR: old stone church, nicely-dressed woman and man in hotel garden. Pan hotel and bay with dramatic shafts of sunlight pouring through heavy clouds in distance. Sunset, sunbathing woman, sailing boat in water at day's end. "Montego Bay" written in the sand, then pretty good color footage of hills and harbor. LS Pan Am Clipper airplane (seaplane) landing in harbor. Very good views of passenger plane approaching the dock. Title says "Goodbye Kingston" then we have aerial through Clipper window of hills and clouds. interesting POV shot through window of airplane of hotels along beach -- this may be Havana, Cuba. LS Pan AM clipper taking off, good pan of Havana with hotels and water. LS Morro Castle. LS Havana rooftops with capitol building in distance. Good street scenes, woman seated at a cafe. LS Pan American Airways Clipper taxiing in water, freighter in background. POV shot through window of capitol and Havana harbor as airplane takes off. Aerial shots of the Florida Keys. Shadow of airplane on water and rainbow viewed from above. Aerial views of mansions in or near Miami, Florida: this was a time when Florida was a haven for the super-rich. POV shot of wing and float of Clipper, shortly after landing in water. film changes to B&W again, and we see family members reclining on deck chairs, street scene with old cars and palm trees, and shots in an orange grove, including a sign "King Orange." CU oranges in baskets, CU swan and ducks in water. CU peacock, flamingoes. MS sunbathing woman on beach chair, puts on silly hat. Pan lagoon with elegant houses, brief view of yacht at dock.
