| Description: | Pay Honors To Cruiser Named For City Eight years later, survivors and next of kin of hundreds who died in a flaming battle off Guadalcanal, pay tribute to the 'San Francisco.' A plaque commemorating the battle is unveiled. The heavy cruiser USS San Francisco was the flagship of Admiral Daniel J. Callaghan, who led U.S. Naval forces in a night engagement against the Japanese Fleet. The battle was one of the most fierce between naval surface forces in the war.
