| Description: | PEARL CULTIVATION Processes involved in cultivating pearls. Japan L/S of a large room with men working at small tables on either side. "All pearls are produced by reason of an irritant entering the delicate pearl-tissues of the oyster, taking seven to ten years to form." C/U of man putting a tiny pearl inside a shell (or possibly the irritant to make a pearl). "cages are used to contain the treated oysters, to prevent very posible loss and to ensure easy ..." L/S of the cages which contain the treated oysters on this pearl cultivation farm. Camera pans to show workers prodding the cages with long sticks. "...where they are suspended in the ocean from rafts, the depth being carefully chosen for warmth of tempertaure." Moving shot from a boat of the rafts. "Periodical inspection is made by an expert diver..." Man in old fashioned metal diving helmet bobs around by a wooden boat. Three men on board the boat operate a primitive pump. The diver is pulled towards the boat with a rope. "Every six months the cages are raised." M/S of men on a large raft pulling the cages up. Various shots of them at work. "The oysters are removed and cleaned of "all deleterious" matter to allow better feeding and growth." M/Ss of the oysters being cleaned. "...and transferred to newly-tarred cages, which are again suspended below the rafts." M/S of the cages being placed back in the water. "The Culture Farm contains oysters in all stages of maturity and approximately ten years after treatment these are finally raised." Moving shot from a boat of all the rafts and workers. "..which are in every respect identical with those produced accidentally by Nature..." C/U of pearl being removed from an oyster with tweezers. "...possessing equally colour, lustre, and perfect shape, and pronounced by all biological scientists as genuine pearls." | |
