| Description: | PICTURES BY AIR! Early primitive fax machines from 1920s (film from 1929). 1920s prototype of the modern day fax machine is demonstrated - man "faxes" his wife a cheque. London Husband at work and wife and little girl at home are shown sending pictures and notes back and forth to each other via fax. Shots seem to be out of order. Starts w/ man standing by machine, holding up and looking at a series of pictures. CU cylinder turning. More CUs of cylinder turning w/ a tube sort of thing moving slowly underneath it. MCU man looking at picture. He wraps picture around cylinder of fax machine, starts cylinder turning and tips down the tube-like thing that "reads" it. CU tilt down: mother leans over shoulder of little girl c. age 4, holding a picture of a lady which they have received via fax. She hugs the daughter, hands her the picture, there is much delight and excitement. Very brief few frames CU machine. MCU the woman and child sit at their own fax machine watching as the cylinder turns; more hugging and excitement, especially from the woman kneeling behind girl w/ head on the kid's shoulder. MCU man takes a picture off his machine, holds it up. ECU picture, it's a profile of the Prince of Wales in naval uniform. ECU a man's hands holding up paper with 2 fingerprints (?) He attaches this paper to cylinder, folding bar over edge to hold it in place. (I think the following shots are in reverse! She's actually sending the message.) MCU woman stands watching machine turning, takes a paper off. ECU she is holding up note: "Dear Hubby, I have seen a dream of a hat- -and only a paltry ten pounds! Without this dream life seems a nightmare, so do come to the rescue. Your Wifie XXXX" MCU, CU of another machine spinning w/ picture of Prince of Wales on it. CU another fax machine at work. Then back to MCU woman and girl; woman puts paper round cylinder, turns handle. MS young man in office stands by large table with several fax machines on it. CUs of 2 different fax machines. ECU the husband. CU note on fax machine turning; it stops, woman removes it, holds it up. It is a joke check - -copy of a Lloyds Bank check, written out to Wifie for 10 pounds, and signed by "Perhaps Nott." Another shot stuck in of man holding up pic of Prince of Wales. CU woman laughing as she reads note (presumably the check from "Hubby"). Communications, inventions, facsimile, fax machine, office machines, technology, husbands and wives | |
