| Description: | COLOUR PICTORIALS Pipe organ in private house. The experts said it was impossible, but Mr. Herbert Barrett has achieved the dream / obsession of his life - -he and a friend have installed a full sized 800-pipe organ in his home - -the pipes are somehow squeezed into the attic, the keyboard is on the 1st floor landing; and the sound comes through ceiling grates. M/S of Herbert Barrett coming up a ladder into a cramped loft where various organ pipes can be seen; he is followed by another man. M/S of the two men clambering across the loft to examine the pipes as the commentator tells us Herbert has installed a full-sized, eight-hundred-pipe organ in the loft of his home in Gidea Park, Essex. The other man, Stanley Harris (who built the organ in the loft for Herbert) checks one of the pipes and uses a brush to clean it. High angle M/S as Herbert is seen climbing down the loft ladder. We are told the pipes in the loft are connected by electric wiring to a console keyboard on the first floor landing; we see Herbert sitting on the seat before the keyboard and pressing keys; C/Us of Stanley, still in the loft, checking the pipes. M/S as Stanley joins Herbert at the keyboard (the main parts of the organ and console were bought from the Cafe Royal in Regent Street, London) and starts to play (I don't think this is natural sound). C/Us of the special shuttered gratings in the ceiling that the sound comes through, and the pipes in the loft. Commentator says "By keeping the roof insulated - and the windows closed, the neighbors can't complain". | |
