On the fifth ballot Giovanni Battista Cardinal Montini becomes 262nd Supreme Pontiff of half-a-billion Roman Catholics. He takes the name of Pope Paul VI and at 65 years old pledges to carry on the work of Pope John XXIII who pledged the Church to taking an active role in world affairs. Vatican, Rome, Italy A very patient crowd waits in St. Peter's Square. MCUS - Two nuns from two different orders standing with an umbrella. MCUS - A priest looking through binoculars. MLS - Puffs of white smoke coming from the chimney from the Sistine Chapel. A pope has been elected. MOHS - Throngs of Christians are applauding and waving hankies. CUS - Bells are ringing. MOHS - Inside the Sistine Chapel there is one vacant seat. MS - The new Pope receiving and greeting the Cardinals one by one. MOHS - Throngs wait for the official announcement of the new Pope. MLS - A Cardinal announces on the balcony in Latin, "I announce to you with tidings of great joy. We have a Pope". MOHS - The crowd in St. Peters Square erupts with joy applauding the new Pope. MLS - The new Pope steps on to the balcony and blesses the people. People kneel down and make the sign of the cross. MLS - The Pope turns around and walks into his new home. | |
