It ranks as one of the great democratic institutions invented in last half century. Being confronted and endangered by one of the oldest types of political institutions, a rigid military autocracy ruled by police power. It speaks well of democracy to safeguard their freedom... their political maturity in being able to keep that freedom unimpaired, while putting forth the effort to build up their collective strength. The people of my country and peoples of the other countries of the Atlantic community, do not cherish military strength for its own sake. They know that they need military strength to be secure against aggression. They know that a vacuum of weakness as was seen in Korea, constitutes a fatal temptation to autocracies determined to expand, and unless this vacuum is replaced by strength we will be eventually be undermined and overwhelmed. For this reason we seek to build forces adequate to deter or to meet it." LS. Delegates applauding. LS. Chairman addressing the assembly - natural sound: ".....in all the long history of their country, there is no more inspiring episode than the refusal of the Greek people to submit to Nazi or Communist curse. We welcome Greece to our membership, in the person of the distinguished Vice-Premier and Foreign Minister, bearing the honoured name of Venizelos. The Republic of Turkey, too, joined our ranks at this council in session. Turkey the home and breeding place of sturdy citizens in the courageous defence of peace. To spread influence far beyond its own territory. Turkey is on the right flank of our coalition, great pressure has already been exerted by those with aggressive moods we fear, to fight, help and join our line of defence. If the Turks do not fight these, and their valiant soldiers have shown, once again in the United Nations forces in Korea, that they have covered themselves with glory. Turkey stands firm with us for peace and security, so we welcome, very warmly indeed, the new member of our council, the representative of a resolute and stout hearted people, Dr Fuat Koprulu. LS. Dr Fuat Koprulu, Turkey's Minister of Affairs, walking to the speaker's chair, shakes hands with the President and speaks in French - natural sound. LS. Delegates applaud. MS.
