| Description: | In his first press conference since his recent operation, President Eisenhower expresses confidence that he can continue his efforts on the nation's behalf for another four years but stresses that it's up to the voter to decide the question finally. Q. This again is one of those personal questions about your health sir, but uh, perhaps you don't realize that the impact you had on the people of this country. You having an attack of ?-ill-laities and a major operation after your heart attack and when we all were in Gettysburg for instance, I went around talking to your neighbors and friends and ask them how they felt about you running again? Well they all love you as you know and said that their going to vote for you but they really wish you wouldn't run because you have done enough for the nation. You made so many sacrifices and they're afraid that you wont live another 4 years. President Eisenhower - Well sir, I'll tell you frankly... I don't think its too important to the individual, how his end comes and certainly he can't dictate the time. What were talking about here is the importance to the country. And it happens that at this moment the Republican Party apparently thinks that I am still important to them and to the country. And since I believe so much in the Republican Party and I believe it needed rebuilding, so badly, an effort which I have been making as you all know, I said I would continue to try. But this is a decision that the American people are going to have to face. I am flattered by what you tell me about my friends and neighbors at Gettysburg. I have made up my mind - this is the thing I should try and we will see what the American people will have to say about this. With that, President Eisenhower concludes the press conference and leaves with his aids. | |
