| Description: | At his weekly press conference, President Eisenhower decries the use of force, and expresses hopes that a peaceful settlement of the explosive Suez issue will be reached at the coming London Conference. President Eisenhower walks into the Conference room and up to the microphones. President Eisenhower - "Good morning - we’ll go right to questions" Reporter Butch Castle from United Press - Could you tell us sir how you feel about the use or threat of military force in the Suez dispute? President Eisenhower - "Well, I can't answer that question quite as abruptly and directly as you asked it. The United States has every hope that this very serious difficulty will be settled by peaceful means. We have stood by the conference method not only with the Suez Canal not only with this problem but with very similar ones. I can't conceive of military force. Being a good solution, certainly on their conditions as we know them not and uh, in view of our hopes. I can't conceive the use of military force. Being a good solution, certainly under conditions as we know then now and in view of our hopes that things are going to be settled peacefully." | |
