| Description: | Hal Roach presents the Vanity Fair Girls with Eddie Boland in a very British silent comedy about a bumbling plumber (Eddie Boland) who ends up a prince in a middle eastern land. The whole thing starts with the plumber getting a house call; he bypasses the garaged car, puts on roller skates and heads for the call. Tight LS's of him gliding dangerously through traffic and such, passenger cars just missing him, all to the plumber's ignorance. CU of the roller skates. CU of a man honking a car horn. Well, the plumber gets to the call which happens to be a gas leak so of course he has to check out the problem with a lit candle which of course sets off a chain explosion which of course sends him into the stratosphere (goofy MS of the sooty plumber flying through the air). He lands in an undesignated, far-off land of middle eastern descent, a place where the natives herald him as their new prince, Prince Pistachio. And so after all the initial hub-bub and mistaken identity jazz enters the princess, Princess Paprika, and her quasi-Arabic harem of attractive, young, sprite women. Meanwhile an evil magician with nifty facial hair (it really looks like some wiry English guy in black face) takes a nasty shine to the new prince so he tries to usurp princely power only to end up in jail. Miffed, the evil magician starts placing hexes and curses on the prince, making him do insulting things to the princess and her harem; great MS's of the Arabic Rasputin doing peculiar hand jives and castings. Well, of course the real prince arrives and the magician breaks himself free and everyone chases the false prince who escapes with the princess and the harem on a canopied elephant (tight and wide LS's of the elephant ride through the desert). | |
