It's Helgoth, key fortress protecting the German coastline and shipping during the days of Hitler. After the war, the Allies expelled the 1400 people living there and used the island as a bombing range. Now, in bitter winter weather, the attackers land. They're 20 Germans protesting the British action, demanding that the inhabitants of Helgoland be allowed to return to their homes. The British have to stop bombing the place, of course, and must now consider steps to meet the move. A few days later, police remove 17 of the squatters, only to have two dozen others clamor ashore. The sit-down strikers carry the proposed flag of Europe as their standard." | |
