| Description: | RAISING OFFICERS New recruits undergo training at the RNVR officer training school of HMS King Alfred. could be Portsmouth, Hampshire. New recruits arrive at HMS King Alfred, an RNVR (Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve) officer training school. We see the men registering and being examined by the doctor, then several shots of the men undergoing training. They are seen wearing gas masks in civvies then in naval uniform and going into a tent for a gas test. Several shots of the men in uniform on parade and drilling. They have lessons in semaphore signalling, sail rigging and seamanship, navigation - all this on dry land. Commentator says there are several Canadians in this group of trainees. Sailors march around a field carrying flags, each flag representing a ship, so that the officers get used to manoeuvres and commanding their squadrons. Sailors are seen rowing over the water in a small launch. On a real ship the officers use navigation equipment such as the sextant and compass. Nice shot of a qualified officer reading his posting on a notice board and shaking hands with his friends. An instructor or naval official walks along a line of officers and congratulates them. | |
