| Description: | Use catalog #497642 B/W German newsreel (Welt Im Film) on the postwar reconstruction of Berlin and other German cities. Title: "Vom Wiederaufbau" German VO. Title appears over elevated shot of reconstruction site. Shots of men hauling large steel girders into place for bridge (re)construction: raising steel beam with pulley, man standing at crane, watching, laborer standing on beam as it is guided into place, shots of cranes on steel superstructure, guiding beams into place: shots are taken from further and further back; eventually we can see that they are building a railroad bridge. Women workers drill hole in building, to insert dynamite charges. Man with horn stands in front of building, blows it as warning he runs off. Man pushes plunger on detonator. Building (large, battered old building with elevated railroad track running into it) blown up. Man blowing horn. Men standing, pointing at building wreckage. Another old building demolished. MS steam shovels digging through rubble at site of demolished building. Rock crushing sequence: Ls of rock crushing machine, followed by shots of bricks being fed onto conveyor belt, moving into hopper, being crushed several times, eventually into near-powder. Man shoveling, nifty elevated train (suspended from top rails) passes in background. Pouring dirt/debris. Exterior ruined castle (Cologne?), followed by shots of workmen breaking up its stone and concrete with pneumatic drills.Segment on Hamburg begins with steam shovel lifting rubble, putting it in boxcars pulled by electric streetcar. Great shot of conductor riding on top of cars filled with debris. MS tilt down on Bamberg cathedral, followed by shots of Bamberg's historic streets, buildings, and bridges. POV from car through Bamberg street. Ends with LS of Bamberg rooftops, cathedral in the distance. | |
