| Description: | REICHELT JUMPS OFF EIFFEL TOWER Franz Reichalt jumps from Eiffel Tower to his death; Feb 4, 1912. A very strange macabre bit of film. Paris, France Franz Reichalt wearing self-designed parachute; he turns around to show it. Reichalt standing on a stool placed on a table; by the railing on the platform; the "parachute" looks like a giant baggy birdman jumpsuit costume which supposedly would fill up with air; several cords on the inside; as he stands there he sort of shakes it a bit so that baggy pants fall down around his ankles - apparently intentionally since he just leaves them that way. Reichalt stands with one foot on the stool and one foot on the railing for a while; preparing for the "flight" or trying to work up the nerve. Finally he jumps. Shot from farther back; with Eiffel Tower like silhouette; Reichalt comes straight down the center of the screen; pan down as he falls to the ground. Shot of police and a crowd gathered round Reichalt's body. Police carry body away. In one last bizarre shot. CU of hand reaching in from rt. using stick to measure the depth of the hole made by the body falling. | |
