| Description: | RESEARCH INTO HAIR Hair research at Beecham Laboratories Brentford, Middlesex. M/S in hair dressing salon at Beecham Laboratories; two women at the left are sitting under hairdryers, a woman at the right is having her hair set and a man comes into shot to take the middle seat. M/S as a barber fits a circular apparatus to the man's shoulders - it looks like a basketball hoop. C/Us as he places a piece of white fabric over it and fastens it round the man's neck (presumably to catch the cut hair), and of various hair cutting instruments on a table as a hand comes into shot and picks up some electric clippers. C/Us as the barber clips the man's hair, then of the table as he replaces the clippers and picks up a pair of scissors and comb; the man's hair being cut and the hair falling on the white fabric. M/S as the hair cut is finished; C/U as the barber brushes the cut hair into a pile on the fabric and takes off the apparatus. Commentator says "These cuttings are then subjected to tests to discover the effects on hair structure and growth that have been produced by experiments with hair preparations". C/U of the cut hair being taken from a glass jar and put into a glass beaker on a laboratory table; M/S and C/U of the hair being weighed. C/Us and M/S of a strand of hair being stretched to check elasticity; it is held between two tiny weights and put in a test tube filled with water; C/U of a needle which records the stretching onto paper attached to a revolving cylinder. M/S of a girl at the microtome - a hair slicing machine that looks a bit like a bacon slicer. C/U of the slicing apparatus; the hair seems to be covered in a tissue paper casing. M/S as the girl removes a sliced section, cuts a small piece from it and places that on a glass slide, preparing it for microscopic examination. M/S of a man in a white coat sitting at a microscope; C/U as he looks into it. M/S back in the salon of a woman having her finished hairdo sprayed with setting lotion; two men walk into shot and examine her hair; C/U of it being examined, then she turns round and smiles. | |
