GV. The North Circular road at night. LV. The flame which is coming up through holes in a manhole. SCU. The manhole and the flame. GV. Men digging up road searching for leak. SV. Men drilling road while firemen hold hose spraying road with water to prevent sparks. SV. Pneumatic drill going into road. SV. Sign on top of van "By Gas It's Cosy!" SV. Men digging up road. SV. Man being given artificial respiration. GV. Man being lifted into ambulance on stretcher. SV. Pan, men drilling the road. SCU. Puddle showing bubbles which are being caused by escaping gas. SV. The flame burning. Angle shot of a building bearing words "Fire Research Station". Station is at Boreham Wood. GV. Interior of the research center, wooden crib in background has been set on fire to test the effect of wind on fires. SV. Giant fan which produces winds from five to fifteen miles an hour, pan to the burning crib. CU. Wood of the crib burning, & top view. SV. A duct of the type used in factories to carry flammable gasses and various vapors from one part of the plant to another. It is used to try to discover how relief vents can be used to lessen the chance of an explosion within the duct. Explosion within blows off the casing. SCU. The bare frame of the duct. SV. A metal duct of a different type, this has hatches at certain intervals along the duct. Explosion is produced within the duct an the hatches blow off. SV. A tank of burning petrol with foam being sprayed over it to test the thickness of the foam required to contain a spirit fire. SCU. The foam spreading finishes, considerably less flames are seen. CU. The foam on top of the petrol which is still burning slightly. GV. A jet engine inert gas generator which reduces the amount of oxygen in the air is used to pump gas into a burning building to change its chemical structure. SCU. A technician looking at dials on the generator. Camera pans as one of them throws a lever. GV. The generator discharging the gas which now contains 45% water vapor 45% of nitrogen about 7% of oxygen (the usual amount of oxygen in the atmosphere is 21%) and the rest is made up of carbon dioxide. The gas turns into a vapor in the film but this would not happen in the high temperature of a burning building - it would remain clear. GV. Crowd standing round a specially constructed building which is burning. The building is built in such a way to reduce the risk of the fire spreading. SV. The building burning on the ground floor. CU. Flames. SVB. Flames seen looking through crowd. SCU. Viscount Quentin Hogg Hailsham, Minister of Science, who opened the research station, watching the display. SV. The building still burning on the ground floor, & SV.
