| Description: | SIR JOHN REITH OBLIGES Minister of Information Speaks about the Effects of Newsreels in Foreign Neutral Countries MS. Sir John Reith, Minister of Information speaking at the CEA (Cinematography Exhibitors Association) banquet he speaks about the effect of the newsreels in foreign neutral countries, this is his second speech at the banquet and it is for the benefit of newsmen who asked him to read a telegram, as part of his speech, they had received from abroad. Intercut with CUs of VIPs on top table. Speech: "I'd better give you a verbal explanation. The newsreel people either didn't approve of what I read before or they prefer what I read when I wasn't being filmed, so they asked me to read this telegram again and because this is good propaganda so now I start. (Laughter) This I will say was not in the contract. (Laughter) Here is a telegram from a foreign country which so far as I know has never had a British Newsreel before. (Telegram's Text): 'The newsreels which arrived yesterday are excellent. They are by far the best films of this type.' edit. '...give me your assurances these films will arrive regularly so that we may establish contracts with legal cinemas here.' "So much for British Newsreel Propaganda in neutral countries." Applause. | |
