| Description: | SLAVES OF THE SHUTTLE The Rug Makers of San Miguel. Nicely shot film about the rug-makers of San Miguel in Mexico. San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico Marketplace crowded with vendors displaying a variety of wares and shoppers walking along looking things over; square shaped sunshades sticking up at different angles; tall trees on either side and church tower in BG. MLS woman in long skirt & shawl wrapped around her and over her head stopped talking to women vendors sitting on the ground; she sits down with them and holds part of her large shawl up for the vendor to scoops something into it - -some sort of grain? Woman vendor is wearing a wide-brimmed straw hat sloping down in front and turned up in back. MS man standing in shallow water of river, washing wool in a basket; he wears white shirt and pants rolled up to be short shorts, straw hat. LS same: man finishes washing wool, carries basket to riverbank; scenic surroundings w/ many tropical plants along rthe riverbank, some trees. MLS man carries basket along bank; he stops and starts energetically swinging the basket back and forth in a wide arc to drain water from it. Then he dumps the fleece on the ground. MLS 2 women and a young girl kneel on ground at edge of water, washing clothing; they are using slightly hollowed out washboards; meanwhile 2 toddlers sit in the water. MLS 2 women working in yard; elderly woman carding wool, young woman spinning; a row of tall narrow cacti forms a sort of fence behind them. MCU the old Abuelita carding the wool. MS young woman operating spinning wheel. MLS man stands weaving at loom set up outdoors, while 2 other men in FG, both wearing sarapes over their shoulders and sombreros., hang out talking. MS weaver at loom. MCU weaver operating loom. Man taking finished sarape/zarape from the loom; he holds it up to show it to camera; looks like Aztec type design in center, with crooked cross symbols (like swastikas) around it, stripes on ends. MCU cute child c. age 3 wearing sarape & sombrero- -and a big grin. (Can't tell the child's sex for sure--seems to be wearing dress under the sarape; hair is all tucked up inside hat.) CU same. Kid grinning, giggling. Weavers, weaving, textiles, industry, loom, spinning, wool, carding, market, marketplace, commerce, laundry, clothing, traditional, Mexico | |
