| Description: | SNIPPETS FROM "FOLLY TO BE WISE" Extracts from the review "Folly to be Wise" starring Mary Eaton, Nelson Keys and Cicely Courtneidge. New Picadilly Theatre Revue, 1930. Opens w/ stage full of chorus dancers in period costumes of 17th century w/ powdered wigs, all doing an energetic dance in which they swing balls on strings back and forth in unison! Next, Mary Eaton performs a sort of ballet number w/ lots of spins and kicks, but she is wearing "stage dance" shoes w/ heels; 2 rows of women in ballet costumes form an arc behind her. MLS backstage scene, w/ several actors and techies running around. Actor Nelson Keyes does a quick change between scenes, putting on a wig and character makeup; dresser helps him on w/ padded vest, jacket. CU Keyes in costume as an elderly man; he straightens his tie, makes a weird mean face and exits. For the last act shown here, comedienne Cicely Courtneidge does a spoof of the acrobatic dancing that was popular in theatre in this era. CC performs w/ 3 men and another woman. The others do the straight bits - real acrobatic dance - and CC does a comic version. First, a good-looking young man lifts the other woman above his head, using only one hand to hold her in an upright position; the other 3 pose in BG. Next, the hunk lifts CC above his head and carries her around; she's in a horizontal position w/ one leg sticking up in the air. He then slowly sets her down in front of him; not extremely graceful but still fairly normal. Next, another guy lifts her straight up; she breaks out of her pose to scratch her leg. The real dancers perform a skillful stunt: the woman takes a running jump, is caught by one of the men who does sort of a cross between boosting her and throwing her up and over his head to the other man who catches her above his head! More acrobatics follow. Next, CC tries to do the same stunt: She comes running, jumps up, is caught by the first guy, but he doesn't let go. She kicks her legs and flails her arms until he puts her down. Next, the guy picks her up in horizontal position and spins around and around. When he puts her down she is dizzy and staggers around the stage. MS CC kneeling in a dramatic pose but still dizzy, blinking and looking confused. | |
