| Description: | SOLDIERS SPORTS MEETING Sports day for soldiers: obstacle courses, steeplechase and cricket match against women. British Army Soldiers' sports meeting; World War One; c. 1915. One of many of such meets incl. wacky contests; obstacle course; steeplechase; silly sports; etc. Opens with a contest involving horses--the soldiers run next to their horses; holding onto a halter; race to a row of chairs in the middle of a field and sit on one. (This is actually a tricky and dangerous sport; similar to a contest done in rodeos.) They repeat this. Next a race in which soldiers approach from having flipped over through hanging rings; crawl under a tarp on the ground; emerge from that (oops! here's a guy stopping to tie his shoe) and crawl through pipes laid out on the ground--pretty funny. CU man sitting and eating something; pan to others sitting on the ground eating. Suddenly they all get up and go tearing off! What was in that snack; supervitamins or speed? Cricket battle of the sexes between soldiers and women: shot of man in FG at bat; and woman catcher behind him; a few other women a few yards away; women all wearing long skirts; which I should think is quite a handicap! The woman catcher throws a few times in that winding overhand cricket way; and she seems to be pretty good at pitching. Pretty cool! | |
