| Description: | Space Hero: Nation Hails Carpenter The fourth U.S. Astronaut to probe outer space and the second to orbit the earth, Scott Carpenter, returns to cape Canaveral for the first of many roaring welcomes. He's welcomed by his mother, wife and children and then holds a press conference in which he elaborates on details of the flight. Carpenter hugged by wife, then by daughters. "Welcome Back Scott" banner. Carpenter seated in convertible with wife, escorted by police on motorcycles in procession. Carpenter waves to crowd. Tracking shot of little boy standing on wooden piling, holding large American flag, great patriotic shot. Women in audience applaud (clapping). Carpenter up on stage talking with John Glenn "Manned Spacecraft Center" behind, others present include Gus Grissom and Alan Shepard. Pin ceremony, Man pinning medal on Carpenter. Press conference. Carpenter seated between two other men, explains his opinion of the mission. Carpenter says (natural audio) "I understand the report came from Hawaii, that it was a tired and confused astronaut. If my opinion is worth anything to you, this is not true. I will admit to being pre-occupied. I would like to apologize for the concern I caused the people who watched the flight, for the concern in the control center. Had I known how concerned you were, I would have been concerned. But, I was not. The problem was in communications. My status was good throughout. And in many respects, this was as easy as a bus ride." | |
